We will collaborate with the Cayuga Vocal Ensemble and the Onondaga Civic Symphony for a spring concert entitled "Dona Nobis Pacem - Grant Us Peace". There will be two concerts -- Friday, May 16 at 7:30pm at Most Holy Rosary in Syracuse AND Sunday May 18 at 4pm at First Presbyterian Church in Ithaca.
This collaborative concert will feature Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem and Cherubini's Requiem in C minor. The Vaughan Williams cantata is his powerful setting of Walt Whitman’s anti-war poetry, pairing it with Biblical and Mass texts to create a pacifist and humanist statement. First performed in 1936, the work has stirred audiences during times of peace and times of unrest. Vaughan Williams wrote this piece with knowledge of both the preceding war and the turmoil that would soon lead to the Second World War. The early Romantic era composer Luigi Cherubini was affected deeply by the French Revolution. His Requiem in C minor is a beautiful complement to the Vaughan Williams composition, sharing the final movement text “Dona nobis pacem,” or “Grant us peace.” Our three-organization collaboration underlines the importance of this great work. As always when we make music together, we create community and compelling connection to common cause. These ensembles share the goal of sharing diverse music of the highest quality with audiences throughout the region. |
